Website Content

In order for Search engines to rank your site, and to be picked up through social media, content is more important than ever. When you are creating your page, take into consideration the following things:

  • Page name – Use a strong keyword to identify the page. For example, “handbags”. This will be in your url - the url link will be sitename.com/handbags.
  • Page format – Use keywords and phrases for your headings and subheadings – H1, H2, H3, H4 etc…
  • Copywriting – The first 200 words on the page should be specific and contains keywords. If you need help in copywriting, check out CopyBlogger for copywriting tips (or hire a professional to do it for you!)
  • Anchor text – The anchor text that links to other pages should contain keywords instead of the generic “click here” eg. “Customized design handbags”  not  “For customized design handbags click here”
  • Alt attributes – This is used for your images (see this when you hover your mouse over). It is recommended a 16x40 pixel block should contain between 1-12 words, be descriptive and support “accessibility (ADA) and include keywords. It must make sense to a person and be descriptive of the image. Also to remember that pictures and graphics don’t equate into words, tags are no substitute for actual text in the body of your site, use images when really in need.
  • Keep it fresh – Update your site on a regular basis to engage your readers, so they can keep coming back for more.

Open up a Pay Per Click (PPC) account

A very effective way to advertise your site is to open a Pay Per Click (PPC) account, it’s worth the investment. Plus you only pay if your ad gets clicked on. This can be done through the top 3 listed Search Engine players:

Google Adwords being the most predominant player, you can add your Google Adwords Tracking Id to your account so you can track your purchase conversions. This is a great way to identify how effective your AdWords ads and keywords are performing against your sales. If you’re using DecoNetowork, go to “Manage Store > Site Config> Site Settings” in the “Google Adwords” section, paste your tracking Id/code in and click the update button.

Another great feature, to improve your Adword tracking is to have Google Analytics enabled.
Create an account, go to - http://www.google.com/analytics/

When you have signed up, and logged into your Google Analytics account, on the top right next to “My Analytics Account” click on the drop menu “Create New Account”. Fill in your “website’s URL”, account name, select your time zone and country and click on continue.

On the next page, enter your name and select your country, click continue, then check the terms and conditions, and lastly click on the “Create New Account” button. The next page will display the code for you to paste into your site. With your DecoNetwork.com store, you will only need to know the UA-number – eg. UA-12345678-1

In DecoNetwork under “Manage Store > Website Statistics > Google Analytics”, paste your Google Analytics Code in the box to enable tracking.

Take advantage of local search opportunities

Optimize your site to catch local traffic by showing your address and local phone number prominently. Write a detailed Directions/Location page using neighborhoods and landmarks in the page text. Submit your site to the free local listings services that the major search engines offer. Make sure your site is listed in local/social directories such as Yellow Pages, CitySearch, Yelp, Local.com, as well as your local council or business listings. Encourage customers to leave reviews of your business on these sites.

Of course don’t forget the simple things to ensure your local and existing customers know about your website. Ensure your web address is included on everything – business cards, shop signage, invoices & receipts, etc.

A good incentive for existing customers is to give them a discount for their next order, if they order online.
